Eyes are windows to the soul
Written by Perle Rose
There is a painting of an old woman smiling
She is in an green dress with golden accents
Her whole face is smiling
Conveying contentment and happiness
Behind her eyes is her whole life
Behind her eyes, you can tell there is a full life and a wonderful story
Her tone is firm
"I have to move"
"I need to feed my babies"
"I need to learn English for conversation"
"I want to learn how to drive"
She knows what she wants
"I want to work"
"I want to go back to school"
"I want to get a scholarship"
"I need your help to apply for housing assistance"
Her voice is shaky
"The school called, I am worried about my son"
"My husband lied to me"
"We are not safe in that place"
She is confused
"What do I do about the school, they say my son has behavioral problems"
" Can I apply for work authorization?"
Her breath shortened
"My daughter is not safe"
She got a headache learning English
"Can we take a break?"
She got her Driver's License
"I can drive"
She almost failed her classes
"I don't understand this stuff"
She put in the hard work
"Now that you explain it like that, I can work on it"
She learned
"Look at what I wrote! How is it?"
She passed
"I am graduating!"
Her eyes lit up when she heard that she got the job
"I got it, I have a federal job!"
She does the factory job
She does the cleaning job
She is a nurse
A special education teacher
A social worker
A program coordinator
A business CEO
She is a sister
Mother
Wife
Daughter
She is a neighbor
A co-worker
A cousin
And a friend
She is also a student
An employee
A housewife
A business owner
She lifts up families
Upholds cultures
Makes her own path
Every time we sit together
She smiles
She looks down
She looks up
Then, she looks the world straight into its eyes.
